Encapsulating a Damp Crawl Space in Somerville, NJ
Challenge
A homeowner in Somerville, NJ contacted our team after noticing persistent dampness and moisture in their dirt floor crawl space. The space felt humid year-round and had a musty odor, which raised concerns about mold growth, poor air quality, and the potential impact on the home’s structure and energy efficiency. Because crawl spaces often contribute directly to the air circulating throughout a home, the homeowner wanted to address the problem before it caused further issues. During our visit, we found that the exposed dirt floor was allowing significant ground moisture to rise into the crawl space. Without a vapor barrier or proper insulation, this moisture was accumulating in the air and being absorbed by the framing, increasing the risk of wood rot, mold, and higher energy costs due to temperature fluctuations.
Solution
To solve the problem, we designed a crawl space encapsulation and insulation system tailored to the home. First, we installed CleanSpace, a thick and durable vapor barrier that completely seals the crawl space floor and walls. This system blocks moisture from the ground, prevents outside air from entering, and creates a controlled environment within the crawl space. Next, we installed SilverGlo insulation panels along the crawl space walls. SilverGlo provides high-performance insulation and reflects heat back into the space, helping maintain more consistent indoor temperatures and improving overall energy efficiency. Together, these systems transformed the crawl space from a damp, unhealthy environment into a clean, dry, and properly insulated space. After the installation, the homeowner noticed immediate improvements in air quality and comfort throughout the home. The crawl space is now protected from moisture intrusion, reducing the risk of mold and structural damage while improving the home’s long-term performance and value.
