A crawl space can have more going on than what is immediately visible. Moisture, aging wood, inadequate support, and poor insulation can all contribute to problems beneath a home, which is why addressing only one condition may leave other concerns untouched. A recent project in Brick, NJ gave our team at Quality 1st Basement Systems the opportunity to address the structural woodwork first and then build a complete crawl space system around it. The project began with the existing structural wood components. The main support beam needed to be removed and replaced, while sections of the crawl space joists also required additional attention. Our team used TrueFloor for the structural woodwork, completing both the main beam replacement and TrueFloor joist sistering and replacement.

TrueFloor allows structural wood concerns in a crawl space to be addressed directly. When existing framing has become compromised, simply encapsulating the crawl space does not resolve the underlying wood condition. Depending on the situation, sistering can involve installing new structural wood alongside existing framing to provide additional support, while replacement allows damaged or unsuitable components to be removed and replaced.

Once the structural woodwork was complete, our team could move on to improving the crawl space environment itself. The next step was installing CleanSpace across the crawl space floor. An exposed crawl space floor can allow moisture vapor from the soil to enter the space, contributing to damp conditions. CleanSpace creates a durable barrier between the ground and the crawl space, helping limit that moisture source. The crawl space walls were then insulated with SilverGlo panels. Proper insulation can help improve the thermal performance of the space beneath a home and create a more controlled environment. SilverGlo is designed for crawl space and below-grade applications, making it a natural part of a system that combines moisture control with insulation.

The final structural component of the project was the installation of six SmartJacks. These adjustable steel support posts are designed to provide support beneath the structure and can be fine-tuned as needed. With six SmartJacks installed, the crawl space received additional adjustable support in conjunction with the completed TrueFloor structural work. The order of the work was important. Our team first addressed the structural wood components, including the main beam and joists, before moving into encapsulation, insulation, and additional support. This allowed the project to address both what was happening to the structure beneath the home and the conditions within the crawl space itself.

The finished Brick, NJ crawl space now has several systems working together. TrueFloor addressed the main beam and joist framing, CleanSpace provides a durable moisture barrier over the floor, SilverGlo helps improve insulation along the walls, and six SmartJacks provide adjustable structural support. This type of comprehensive approach can help transform a crawl space from an overlooked area beneath the home into a more controlled and properly supported part of the property.
