Transforming a Wet Basement in Glen Mills, PA
Challenge
After recently moving into their home in Glen Mills, PA, the new homeowners quickly noticed a musty odor coming from the basement. Although the space appeared structurally sound, the smell indicated moisture intrusion, which often hides behind finished walls or along the foundation perimeter. Musty odors are caused by a combination of excess humidity, damp wall surfaces, and water seepage: issues that can worsen with time and spread into the upper levels of a home.
When we inspected the basement, we discovered that groundwater was entering around the perimeter during wet weather, and moisture was being absorbed into the basement air, creating the odor that concerned the homeowners. Without a proper drainage system or moisture barrier, the conditions would continue to affect indoor air quality and potentially lead to mold growth or damage to stored belongings. The homeowners wanted a reliable, long-term fix that would keep their new home healthy, dry, and odor-free.
Solution
To address the root of the odor and prevent future moisture problems, our team installed a full perimeter WaterGuard drainage system, designed to intercept groundwater before it reaches the basement floor. All water collected by the WaterGuard now flows directly to the newly installed SuperSump, ensuring it is pumped safely out of the home, even during heavy or prolonged rainfall.
To tackle humidity and musty odors directly at the source, we encapsulated the basement walls with CleanSpace, a durable vapor barrier that blocks moisture from entering the basement air. Once installed, the CleanSpace liner instantly brightened the space while preventing any future dampness, odors, or vapor transmission.
By combining drainage, pumping, and moisture control, we were able to transform the basement from musty and humid into a clean, dry, fresh-smelling environment. The homeowners now have peace of mind knowing their new home is protected from water intrusion and poor air quality.
