A resident in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey reported a sidewalk shifting and settling. This can happen because concrete is poured over poorly compacted loose soil. Over time, this soil settles and creates voids under the concrete slab. Another common issue is soil erosion under the slab. As water runs through the cracks in the concrete, it washes the soil out as it passes through. A sidewalk is supposed to provide safety, not tripping hazards. This can be a dangerous safety hazard because a resident could trip and fall over the sidewalk.
The resident contacted Quality 1st Basement Systems and our System Design Specialist, Dylan McDonald, helped them come up with a plan to fix this issue. He suggested they use environmentally friendly polyurethane foam to be injected under the concrete slab.
Our foreman, Sean Johnson, used the PolyLevel Injection System under the concrete. This is done by drilling small holes into the concrete and injecting the foam to fill the voids. PolyLevel is a lightweight waterproof material, so it will not add any weight to the existing soil. This process had very minimal disruption and does not require the use of heavy material.
Now, residents can safely walk on the sidewalk without worrying about where they have to walk to avoid tripping.
