January has been a busy month for all of Quality 1st Basement Systems. With new additions to our team in both Sales and Service, everyone is working full speed ahead to assure 2012 is our best year yet. As a dealer for Basement Systems, the opportunities for training are always ones Quality 1st jumps at, often times being able to travel and see how other dealers operate.

The week of January 15th, Jack Jamison, our field supervisor, Rich Hacker and Damon Ludwig, two of our top salesmen, attended training for our Foundation Supportworks division in Omaha, NE. Not only did they learn about everything from push piers to helical piers but also how to determine exactly what is right for each home with foundation issues. A big part of the training was how to spot foundation issues early, whether it be sticking windows or doors that no longer line up quite correctly. These three join our other FSI team members and will be a great asset to us at Foundation Supportworks of New Jersey.

The week of January 22nd, nearly all of our sales team attended Basement Systems training at their headquarters in Seymour, CT. The two-day course started with the basics steps to a sale and went all the way through detailed studies of each product we sell and in what situations each product would be necassary for. The 12 guys, including sales manager Steve Ludlow, were able to reinforce their sales beliefs as well as hear about some great services we offer to waterproof basement and encapsulate crawlspaces in successful and long-lasting ways.

Mayor Wilda Diaz Recognizes Quality 1st for Toy Drive

Recently we received a letter from the Mayor of Perth Amboy, NJ thanking Quality 1st for the donation of christmas toys last month.

Employees of Quality 1st Donate Toys for Holidays

This holiday season, instead of exchanging gifts with one another the employees of Quality 1st Basement Systems reached out to their community. Together with the Department of Recreation in Perth Amboy,NJ, the location of our offices, a company-wide toy drive was initiated and in just a few weeks over 100 toys were donated to families in need for the holiday season.

Mayor Wilda Diaz was came to the office with several members of her staff to meet with everyone at Quality 1st and pick up the toys, which will be distributed amongst seven families in Perth Amboy. It was a great group effort, with every level of employee participating, and brought many employees together to see what others had brought in. With the mayor and her staff here, a special guest stopped by...Santa Claus!

Everyone had a terrific experience and loved making such an impact on people in our community, we can't wait to collect even more next year!

DIY Network's "Man Caves" gets some waterproofing help from Quality 1st Basement Systems

After having worked with the DIY Network last month on an episode of "Man Caves," Bob Cherry jumped at the opportunity to join them again while they made over a basement in West Long Branch, NJ earlier this week. Cherry joined Tony "The Goose" Siragusa and Jason Cameron as they turned a waterfront home's heavily flooded basement into a dry, enjoyable space with a top secret theme!

Quality 1st Basement Systems installaed a triple-safe sump pump, full perimeter drains as well as cleanspace to make sure the basement would stay dry and mold-free.

Quality 1st Waterproofs "Man Caves"

On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of working with DIY Network's "Man Caves" team, waterproofing a basement in preparation of turning it into the ultimate man cave! While we can't spill the theme of this Scotch Plain's basement, we can say that it was a great experience! We installed Clean Space, Waterguard and a Triple Safe sump pump to make sure the space would stay dry and livable and we did it just in time! Shortly after we completed our work, power went out at the residence for over 24 hours but the back up battery allowed the sump to work through the night and keep everything dry for the contractors to come in and work their magic! Jason Cameron was just as knowledgable as he seems on TV and Tony “The Goose” Siragusa kept us all laughing while showing off his waterproofing knowledge! We look forward to working with "Man Caves" again next month as we help make another vision come true.

On Sunday September 25^th Quality 1^st Companies had their first annual Summertime Fiesta! After being delayed due to Hurricane Irene, the family friendly picnic was the pick-me-up we all needed in the office, recharging our batteries and getting us ready for another work week. The Fiesta was held in Wall Township, NJ at YMCA’s Camp Zehnder. It had everything from fishing to rockwall climbing and even a zip line! Everyone enjoyed a great food spread and the kids got to make sand art and get airbrushed tattoos! Tom Roman, the owner of Quality 1^st, and his wife Debbie threw a fabulous get together and we all can’t wait for the next one!

Bob Cherry was listening to NJ 101.5 this week and heard Casey, a host of one of the featured shows, mention that he was having problems with water in his basement. After contacting Casey and we were able to set up an appointment to give his family an estimate to repair that wet basement of theirs. After looking at the basement we know just what we needed to do to fix it, and a few days later we did just that! It was a pleasure dealing with Casey and his wife, we were able to solve all the problems and finished the install in one day! What to do if your basement walls fail.

Here at Quality 1^st Basement Systems we understand that your basement is a valuable space is your home. It can be the space where your children play, you have parties with friends or perhaps where you spend quality family time together. So what do you do when the walls in this area fail?

The first thing you must know is that there are many different ways to fix basment wall failure and it is important to find one that fits your own unique situation. The most general way to fix this problem is through total foundation replacement; however this solution does not always work and may not be the right solution, especially if you do not have access to the outside of your home. For people who have little to no access to the outside of their home, Some options that do work are:

Carbon Fiber Straps: a very strong material that is impossible to stretch and can be easily attached to concrete walls, reinforcing basement walls.

PowerBrace System: an I beam system that is designed to stabilize failing basement walls and allow for potential straightening over time.

If you do have access to the outside of your home, some possible solutions are:

Helical Anchor System: the anchor is screwed into the foundation wall, the hole in the wall is then filled with concrete. A steel plate is put up to connect the helical anchor to the wall.

Wall Anchor Systems: a wall anchor is drilled into the wall and then hooked to steel wall plates with galvanized anchoring rod.

Did you know you can see us on TV? Yes your favorite waterproofing company has hit the big time by recently airing on A&E’s hit home improvement show “Drill Team.” Our company came in to help the “Drill Team” crew in repairing Brian and Dawn’s sunroom. After a rough winter, their beautiful sunroom was left completely destroyed. We know that after this harsh winter we all have had this type of problem with parts of our home and at Quality 1^st we know exactly how to fix your problem.

We're like a family here at Quality 1st Basement Systems. It makes for a terrific, close knit work environment. It is that idea of family and unity that we try to support in the work we do as well. We give families clean and safe homes to live in but most importantly we love the idea of bringing families together.

Over the last decade, many of the families in our country have been separated by wars overseas. There are many wonderful groups such as the American Legion have been connecting people who have loved ones serving overseas to create a large, family-like network.

To celebrate the community that the American Legion of Brick has created they are hosting their 8^th Annual Benefit Veterans Picnic. This picnic will bring together all the families of the Brick, New Jersey area that have family members serving in Iraq, as well as to celebrate family members who have recently come home from the war. Not only is this picnic created to bring together loved ones but also to raise money. The American Legion of Brick is raising money that will be presented to families of soldiers serving overseas.

As soon as we heard about the picnic, we knew that we should become supporter and participant of it. But how does a simple basement waterproofing company help soldiers? I mean we can’t waterproof them out of the war, but we can donate money. And that is exactly what we did. We understand that money is tight for every American nowadays, and we know how important it is to reward our troops for the work they have done for us. Mold Removal and Dry Rot Repair Tips

Mold and dry rot aren't the household guests you want sticking around. In fact, you don't exactly want them to come over in the first place. But, one thing leads to another and they're more persuasive than you'd expect. Then they deplete your homes value, condition and potentially lessen your home's life span.

Where Does Mold Grow?

Mold can grow just about anywhere that moisture can be found. However, in order for mold to stick around it needs more than just moisture, but it needs food. Mold loves organic materials such as carpet, wood, cardboard, and paper. Unfortunately, mold also destroys whatever comes between it and its meal.

Whether your air conditioning unit is leaking, water is leaking inside and onto your windowsill or your carpet never fully dried from the last flood in your basement-- mold will survive and stick around as long as the environment permits.

In addition, mold can significantly decrease your home's indoor air quality-- a worsening concern to many highly recognized organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency. Mold can increase household allergy symptoms and produce an irritating smell most homeowners refer to as "must." In some instances, mold can even be toxic-- as is the case with black mold.

They won't grow in flooded basements because they don't grow in water but thrive in moist environments. Thus, a humid room or "muggy" space becomes most ideal.

Many homeowners find mold in two areas of the home: the bathroom and the basement. Similarly, the most common place to find dry rot is the bathroom. These two rooms are known for their moisture and even the unexpected leaky pipes or water "issues."

The bathroom can easily develop a water problem when the faucet or shower begins to leak, the toilet overflows with water, the shower water is too hot and the room maintains this muggy temperature.

The basement is commonly humid because of the increase in relative humidity caused by the entrance of humid outdoor air into the cooler basement air. This transfer can increase the basement's relative humidity by 2.2 percent per every one degree. And, of course, the basement can also experience the effects of a heavy rain storm or broken pipe or hot water heater.

Basement Waterproofing Defeats the Effects of Hydrostatic Pressure

Your basement doesn't have to be unpredictable, but can be comfortably stable. On the other hand, a proposal is far better enjoyed when the surprise is left undiscovered. But, a basement's surprises are never just as sweet.

How has your basement surprised you in the past? Has it been the floods, the cracks or maybe the mold and must? Whether you've experienced one, multiple or different problems with your basement; hydrostatic pressure is one natural process that could be the cause of many severe basement issues.

What is Hydrostatic Pressure?

When a child hides behind his/her parent it's usually because of fear. When water hides behind a structure it’s in preparation for an attack. The prefix hydro- means water and static means standing or not moving. And when water stands behind a structure its volume only builds and builds until it finds a way through or around said barrier. Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure that a certain volume of water exerts on an object due to gravity.

What Does Hydrostatic Pressure Do?

Hydrostatic pressure can cause your retaining wall to buckle, can cause your foundation to move and walls to crack. Then, you guessed it; your basement will most certainly flood during those heavy rains.
This water pressure can even move through concrete foundations, because against popular belief, concrete is actually porous-- meaning it's not all that solid after all. It has many pores giving concrete its strength, but provides water its open access.

How To Keep Your Basement Dry Against Hydrostatic Pressure

Some waterproofing systems utilize external ways to waterproof the outside of your home. This could very well include a tar or waterproof coating on the actual foundation. However, the most beneficial way to keep a basement dry is not by keeping the wall dry, but by preventing water from building up behind a wall-- thus applying high hydrostatic pressure.

An internal waterproofing drainage system actually meets the water at its prime hangout-- the wall-floor joint. Then, the water is diverted away from your foundation.

Compare External And Internal Drainage Systems

An external drainage system can take a long time to install and could cause a lot of landscaping damage or problems with your electric lines and plumbing. In addition to the work around your foundation, a disposal pipe is placed beneath the ground leading toward a well, which will also need to be dug.

This well can fill with water and the drain can clog-- this all due to the loose soil building up around the foundation and absorbing large amounts of water. In other words, the external "solution" is more of a short term mirage that causes the very problem it's said to be relieving.

In contrast, the internal system can take, at most, a couple of days to install and causes very little damage or residual issues. The internal system will not clog and rests directly on top of the footing.

This system will go around your entire foundation and prevents water from building up and pressuring your walls. No more cracks and no more buckling.

Where Does The Water Go?

Once the drainage system collects the water it will direct it toward a sump pump. This sump pump will them push the water out and away from the home. This sump pump is the heart of the system, if not for the sump, the drainage would have to run a pipe to the outside submitting itself to damage and making for easy access to rodents.

New Jersey Waterproofing Company Helps Out Habitat for Humanity

PERTH AMBOY, NJ - While the northeast is frozen for the next several months, it can be difficult to ensure that no one is left out in the cold. Quality 1st Basement Systems is working towards creating warm shelter for the community by lending a hand to the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. With the help of Quality 1st, a new house was constructed in Millstone, NJ, for a wounded veteran in need of a home.

"It is important to us to help a soldier who was overseas - the men and women of the armed forces are extremely brave," said Bob Cherry, general manager for Quality 1st Basement Systems. "We jumped at the chance to help on this project to show our appreciation for the work that these men and women do."

All building material and labor was donated by Quality 1st, and the project took place over January 12th and 13th. The crew at Quality 1st installed the CleanSpace Crawl Space Encapsulation system over 2,200 square feet in order to seal the crawl space away from the earth and lower the humidity in the house. Quality Concrete, a Quality 1st Company, poured concrete for other parts of the project. While they were there, they were asked about pouring concrete in the crawl space. After discussing CleanSpace and its energy-saving benefits with the rest of the group, the decision was made to install the CleanSpace in the crawl space right on the spot instead of pouring concrete in it. After the house was framed and weather tight, Quality 1st Basement Systems finished the CleanSpace installation.

Quality 1st Basement Systems is pleased to announce the hiring of Don Deardorff, P.E., former Senior Engineer for Chance Civil Construction. Don will join the Quality 1st Basement Systems team working for partner company, Foundation Supportworks, Inc. (FSI), headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Quality 1st Basement Systems is owned and operated by Thomas Roman. Tom and his company have been solving foundation problems within the NJ, NYC and surrounding areas for over 20 years. FSI is a manufacturer of cutting edge foundation support products for both new construction and retrofit applications. Don will be working in the FSI engineering department as a Senior Application Engineer. Don's work will be focused in the areas of product development, product verification testing, preliminary design applications, and the development of technical documents and presentations.

Don was hired by Hubbell Power Systems/Chance Civil Construction in January 2005 as a Senior Engineer. He continued with graduate studies and obtained his Master of Science degree in Engineering in 2007. He is currently in the dissertation phase of the Ph.D. program.
